Divergence from Pakistan’s June Cricket Saga
June, 2024 has been a very disappointing and emotionally drowning month for the Pakistan cricket fans. With Shaheens losing to USA and India from winning positions in the T20 world cup 2024 to news of management overhauls in the PCB post-event, Pakistan’s June cricket saga overshadowed the positive accomplishments of national sides in other sports.
Volleyball
The best performing national side, which have been making some amazing strides from the past 5 years, the national volleyball team, after winning the central asian volleyball championship and crushing Australia 3-0 in a bilateral series, participated in the AVC Challenge Cup and reached the final for the first time ever. Defeating teams like Korea, Vietnam and Kazakhstan on their route to the final. The greens got defeated by the much highly ranked Qatari side who were filled with imported players from Europe and the American region.
Football
The second most popular sport in the country, Pakistan’s football team hosted Saudi Arabia for the second round of FIFA worldcup qualifier for which it had qualified for the first time after defeating Cambodia at Jinnah Stadium in Islamabad. Despite losing by a margin of 3-0 from the green falcons. The men under the leadership of Abdullah Iqbal earned praises from different experts including the the head coach of the Saudi Arabian national team, Roberto Mancini who had great words for the improvement of the national team.
BRICS Games
17 Pakistani athletes participated in the first ever held BRICS games including Amir Sohail (long racer), sprinters Shajar Abbas, Gohar Shahbaz and Abdul Moeed Baloch and Pakistan’s third best javelin thrower Abdul Qadeer Khan. Haider Sultan earned a gold medal in the weightlifting 61 kg category.
Field Hockey
The national sport didn’t remain behind in achieving milestones. Men in green and white qualified for the semi final of FIH Nations Cup 2024 for the very first time and gained fourth position after losing hard fought games from New Zealand and South Africa.
The June Saga
A sad cricketing month doesn’t mean that we should end our sports passions. The shaheens have been flying high in other sports, and we need to support every athlete representing the green and white flag in the international arena with the same passion that we have supported Babar and Co. They made us proud, and now it's our turn to acknowledge them.
